What Are Collagen Chews for Dogs?

A practical guide to what collagen chews are, what to look for in their ingredients, and what to check before choosing one for your dog.

The short answer

Collagen chews are dog chews made with collagen-containing ingredients. Their recipes, shapes and sizes vary between products. To understand a particular chew, check its full ingredient list, dimensions and the manufacturer’s guidance on suitability and use.

What are collagen chews made from?

Collagen is a structural protein found in animal connective tissues. Collagen chews for dogs use collagen-containing ingredients to create an edible chew.  Their composition varies: the animal source, additional ingredients and recipe depend on the product.

When comparing collagen chews, look beyond the name on the front of the packaging. Check the full ingredient list, the product’s dimensions and the manufacturer’s feeding instructions. Different flavours or formats may have different recipes.

What is in our collagen chews?

Our collagen chews are produced in the Netherlands by PurTreat Lab, which identifies beef-derived collagen as their primary ingredient.

The complete recipe matters as much as the main ingredient. When choosing between products, check the composition for the specific flavour or format you are considering, including any added ingredients.

We want you to know what you are choosing for your dog. Each product’s ingredient information should be read alongside its size, suitability guidance and instructions for use.

How do collagen chews compare with cheese chews?

The clearest difference between our collagen chews and cheese chews is their main ingredient. Our collagen chews use beef-derived collagen as their primary ingredient. Our original cheese chews are made with semi-skimmed cow’s milk (99.9%) and sea salt (0.1%).

These are two different ingredient profiles. The collagen chews are beef-derived, while the cheese chews are milk-based. The cheese recipe contains cow’s milk, so it should not be confused with a product made from yak milk.

Ingredients are only part of the comparison. Also consider the dimensions, texture and manufacturer’s suitability guidance for each product. The ingredient list alone cannot tell you which chew will last longer or which is the better match for your dog’s chewing behaviour.

How to choose a collagen chew for your dog

  1. Ingredients: Read the full recipe, including the animal source and any added ingredients.
  2. Size: Check the chew’s actual dimensions and the manufacturer’s size recommendations.
  3. Suitability: Look for age guidance and any restrictions stated on the packaging.
  4. Use and storage: Read the feeding, supervision and storage instructions before offering the chew.
