What Are Cheese Chews for Dogs?

A guide to our original cheese-chew recipe, how it differs from collagen chews, and what to check before choosing one for your dog.

The short answer

Our original cheese chews are made with semi-skimmed cow’s milk (99.9%) and sea salt (0.1%). They are milk-based chews, not animal bones. Check the individual product’s size, suitability and instructions before offering one to your dog.

What are our cheese chews made from?

Our original recipe contains two ingredients: semi-skimmed cow’s milk (99.9%) and sea salt (0.1%). These percentages describe the recipe, not the protein, fat or mineral content of the finished chew.

For a nutritional comparison, look at the product’s analytical constituents and calorie information as well as its ingredient list. Flavoured versions may have different recipes, so check each product separately.

Are cheese chews the same as yak chews?

Names such as “cheese bone” or “yak-style chew” can describe a shape or style without telling you the milk source. Our original cheese chews use cow’s milk. They should not be described as containing yak milk unless that ingredient is actually present.

A milk-based recipe also does not establish that a finished chew is lactose-free. If your dog needs to avoid milk ingredients, this original recipe is not a suitable choice.

How do cheese chews compare with collagen chews?

The main difference in our range is the ingredient base. Our original cheese chews are milk-based, while our collagen producer identifies beef-derived collagen as the primary ingredient in its collagen chews.

Neither description alone tells you which product will last longer, be easier to digest or suit your dog better. Compare the complete recipes, dimensions and manufacturer’s guidance for the specific products.

Texture matters too. Very hard chews can damage teeth; AAHA includes hard yak-milk chews among the examples it cautions against. A harder chew is not automatically a better choice for a forceful chewer. Ask your vet about suitability if your dog has dental problems or a history of broken teeth.

How to choose a cheese chew for your dog

Before choosing, check the information for the individual product:

  1. Ingredients: Check the complete recipe, especially for flavoured products. Our original recipe contains cow’s milk.
  2. Dimensions: Look at the actual measurements and the manufacturer’s size recommendations.
  3. Suitability: Read the age restrictions and consider your dog’s dental condition and chewing behaviour.
  4. Instructions: Follow the feeding, supervision and storage guidance. Do not microwave, soak or modify a chew unless the manufacturer gives instructions for that exact product.
